Seraphiel Model Sheet

So here’s the finished model sheet. I need to move on. I’ve spent enough nights niggling at it and getting nowhere. I’m shipping it even though I might be able to get a little more out of it, because of two reasons. I want to get into the geometry, and also because I want to play with Sculptris some more. This is going up around the web, so look for it.

I really did enjoy working in Sai on this though, despite my recent frustrations with it. Sai is a blast to work with, especially for line art. Can you believe that I did the entire character with the pencil and didn’t even bother trying out the line and pen tools until I got to the sword? Pretty ridiculous. I should have done the whole thing like that: Pen tool and Lazy Stabilizer. Man. That’d have been quick.

Also, I recommend http://www.fontsquirrel.com/ if you need some fonts for projects but you don’t want to have to wade through all of FontFreak to find good ones.

Sculptris

Meet Sculptris. I’ve seen lots of people playing with it, so I tried it out at work today, and I was fascinated instantly. It’s really easy to work with, and produces really nice work if you’re used to sculpting. I only spent an hour or so on this guy here, and I don’t know any hot keys yet.

It’s tools work really well, though you don’t have as much surface control as you do in Zbrush. The one REALLY cool feature that I like the best, that’s totally undersold on this is the fact that it dynamically generates your mesh for you. It has tessellated geometry, which means you’ll likely have to lowpoly the meshes in another app, but you can sculpt whatever you want from a sphere because it just adds geometry where you need it. You can also downsample your model as a whole or by painting lower resolution. If you want to try to try sculpting, give it a shot!

WIP: Seraphiel

Work in progress. She’s taking a long time to concept. Oh well, its been lots of fun thus far.

This is a character that I’m working on with the intent of taking it to Dominance War level. Of course, since the last one is over, and the next one hasn’t started yet, this is just my own thing, but I want to give it a whirl and see where I end up. I’m mostly working in Sai right now, but occasionaly I flip to Photoshop to do something more complicated, like copy-merged for the old portraits on the side.

I’ve been heavily inspired thus far by dominance war finalists and some people I watch on DeviantArt. I’m still not solid on the character design, so I’m going to take another pass at it before I do the side view of the model sheet. She’s a little too bird-like, and I want to steer more towards demon/dragon-ness. I’m thinking I’ll add some metal, a large collar, restraints, possibly some armor like things, and tone down the feather-like horns into sharper, stronger projections or scales.
